Rebecca Minnock has told The Sun she is “happy and “safe”
In February 2013 Rebecca Minnock and Roger Williams separated. A month later, Mr Williams applied for contact with his son, Ethan. On 27th May this year a district judge ruled Ethan should live with his father after finding Ms Minnock had made false allegations and obstructed contact between the father and son. Rebecca Minnock and her son Ethan disappeared from their home in Somerset, on 26th May 2015. The mother with her three year old son contacted a family member to report to The Sun that they are safe. Ms Minnock told The Sun she had “lost all trust and faith in the system completely” following a custody battle in which a judge ruled Ethan should live with his father.
This incident is what we try to prevent. Story?s such as this are not unheard of and we want to reduce this as the child is the one who is most affected. Although this story is heard of, you may argue that it is ironic as the father is stereo-typically the parent who does not get custody. However, it is not about what parent the child should go to, it is about whether or not they will be safe and have a happy upbringing, and if that is with the father, this should not matter. If the father had disappeared with Ethan, the reaction to this story would arguably have been quite different. Society may feel more sorry for the mother as the female sex is perceived as more emotional and weak. This perception needs to stop as this type of behaviour from any sex is unacceptable as the child is in the middle of it.
Ms Minnock reported she had “lost all trust and faith in the system completely”, however, if she made false allegations and obstructed contact with the father and son, the judge has only done what is best for the child.Ms Minnock may think she is protecting her child as she states ?I’ve even got family members into trouble, but it’s my son and I need to put him first over myself or anybody else?. However, it appears she is only putting herself first as the child needs to be with both parents and she is removing him from everything he knows. She reported to The Sun that they are ?safe? and ?happy?, but in all due respect these words are coming from her mouth and not the child?s as he has no say. Therefore, she is describing how she is feeling and only putting herself first. The BBC revealed that Ms Minnock?s brother, sister and mother were arrested, as they were accused of withholding information. Consequently, this has had a ripple effect on the whole family, not just the father and son. We believe at KNBP that if the child has not been brought up properly, they are more likely to grow up being emotionally damaged. At the age of the three, Ethan may not know what his surroudings are, however, when he grows up to learn what had happened and reads several articles about him and his family, this may affect him and the way he will lead his own life.
The child is the most important person in this all. The child has no voice and no choice and therefore, needs to be protected properly. Here at KNBP we want to prevent a child from going through this or any other issues involving separation.
